Being a brownie in the scene, in NYC, we are a rare breed. Most of the NYC metal heads, punks and goths are from different cultural backgrounds. West Indian metal/punk bands are nothing new. Some of these bands have been around since the 80s.
It’s nice to see in Trinidad and Guyana as well as other parts of the Westindies, there are many talented musicians such as Cabezon. I came across this band using a social network site and instantaneously fell in love with them. My favorite song by Cabezon is Reverse Back (the video can be seen on YouTube and Islandnoise.com).
Speaking with band members, via email, Cabezon describes their genre of music as “ROKSO, which is true Trinidadian Rock. It incorporates Trini music such as Calypso, Soca, Rapso, Kaiso and Soul”. From hearing their lyrics, it incorporates their opinions on the world around them and has soulful emotions emitting, behind each song, “can you my people, can you hear their feet? … pull out, the gun from me” [Reverse Back].
To me, Cabezon sounds like a rich fusion of metal and West Indian influences. Cabezon’s line up include Alex, drummer; Josh & Calvin, guitarists and Darius, vocals. Speaking with other Trini’s in the scene, Cabezon is one of the more popular upcoming bands because of their talent. They have played many shows and are even debating touring the states, which I totally hope they do!
