March 15, 2008

Prophet Muhammad as explained by God was “Mercy for all mankind.” The prophet’s birth and death anniversaries reminds Muslims of the Life and Character that they are instructed to follow and emulate.

The occasion celebrated as Milad-un-Nabi inspires Muslims to pause, take stock of their own lives and reflect upon the standards the Holy Prophet had established by way of example. The occasion also serves as a reminder that whatever trials and tribulations one faces, the prophet of god faced even greater and yet he never allowed anger and hatred to determine his actions. Rather he insisted “love for humanity what you love for yourself.’

Milad un Nabi also known as Youmanabi and is celebrated by Muslims as Eid-e-Milad throughout the world. On this day Muslims will re-tell stories to their families of the holy prophet and send their blessings, prayers and recitation of The Holy Quran in his praise. Lectures are given in Mosques and feast and charity is given to the poor and needy. However, this holiday is not celebrated with style because it’s the death anniversary of the prophet also.

Prophet Muhammad was born on the 12th day of Rabi-ul- Awwal [the third month of the Muslim Calendar] which was Monday 20th April, 570 AD in Mecca, Arabia.

-His mother name was Amina. She was the daughter of Wahb Ibn Abdu Manaf of the Zahrah family

-His father Abdullah was the son of Abdul Mutallib.

-Prophet Muhammad father died before his birth.

-Prophet Muhammad’s mother died when he was six years old.

The orphan was put under the charge of his Grandfather Abdul Mutalib who died two years later. After the death of his Grandfather, his uncle Abu Talib raised him.

-Prophet Muhammad genealogy has been traced to the noble house of Ishmael; the son of Prophet Abraham in about the fortieth descends.

-When he was 25yrs old he went to Syria and was offered Khadija hand in marriage. She was famous for her virtues and wealth among the Arabs. Khadija was a widow, 15 yrs his senior. They had one daughter Fatima.

- Prophet Muhammad did not get any formal education. At age 40 his first revelation came down to him on Monday 21st of Ramadan, at night [August 10th, 610 AC]. His revelations were through dreams by angel Jibrael. He had a vision in which he was commanded to preach. Thereafter, throughout his life he had revelations, many of which were collected and recorded in the Holy Quran.

-His fundamental teachings were: there is one god; people must in all things submit to him in this world and have been amply punished for rejecting God’s prophet and there is a heaven and hell waiting for the present generation. The world will come to an end with great judgment. As religious duties he included frequent prayers, giving charity and forbade usury.

-Two months after performing Hajj [pilgrimage] prophet Muhammad fell ill though he continued to lead the congregation prayers.

-On the evening of the 12 Rabi-ul- Awwal [June 8th, 632 AD] prophet Muhammad passed away at the age of 63. He was buried the next morning at the precise spot he died.

-The prophet daughter Fatima died 6mths after his death.

The Birth and Death Anniversary of our Holy Prophet Muhammad is an invaluable lesson for Muslims young and old to partake in. It’s a celebration of joy and mercy that recounts the compassion of the great Prophet.

    I’ve read this, but here are two things I don’t get: when is “Eid-e-Milad”? and is the birth and the death of the prophet the same date?

  2. Apsana says:

    The Birth and Death of our Holy Prophet Muhammad is the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal [which is the third month in the islamic calander or March] but on a different year.

    The Islamic calandar is a lunar calandar, the corresponding date in the Georgian calandar varies each year.An Islamic month consists of 28-29 days. Islamic year consists of 354.37 sometimes referred to as a lunar year.However the Hebrew calandar consists of 13months.

    Sunni Muslims celebrate Eid-e-Milad on the 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal which is March 20th.Shi’a celebrate this holiday on the 17th rabi-ul-Awwal which is March 25th.

    • Ahmed Sharif says:

      @Apsana,
      Hey Mrs.Apsana,

      You are a fool.Muhammad’s deathdate is Safar 28th.

      • Ahmed Sharif says:

        @Ahmed Sharif,
        His last speech occurred on 20th March 632,which was a Friday.It was during the Hajj Pilgrimage and on the day of Id-ul-adha.Then why 12th Rabi-ul-awwal occurred during his death after three months?Only Sunni Muslims celebrate his birthday on that day as Shia’s celebrate after 5 days.Sunni Muslims didn’t mourn his death and he died 2 weeks ago.

    Guyana, Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela observe Eid-e-Milad today. Its the biggest holiday weekend in history- Eid-e-Milad, Tomorrow is Good Friday, Hindus will be celebrating Phagwah on Saturday and Christians will be celebrating Easter Monday. These are all national holidays in most of the Caribbean Islands.

  6. Apsana says:

    Khairun that was very informational.Thank you.

    However,most historians are silent about the exact date of birth of our Holy Prophet- those who mention it there are many contadictions.Some muslims throughtout the world observed Eid-e-milad yesterday while some will be celebrating it on the 25th of March.How do we know which is correct and on which day will you be celebrating Eid-e-milad?

      @Apsana, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) death date is not a 12th rabi-ul-awal. His death day is Monday and the rule of islamic calender 9th zil’haja last spech on haj is Friday and after three months in rabi-ul-awal Monday had not 12th.
      1st if all months are 29 days Monday 2,9,16
      2nd if all months are 30 days Monday 6,13 & 20
      3rd if 2 month are 29 days & One 30 days Monday on 1,8 & 15
      4th if 2 months are 30 days & One 29 days Monday on 7,14 & 16
      its mean that muslims of suni cast only celebaret Birthday on 12th Radi-ul-awal not a death day

  15. St Nabi says:

    Ladies & gentlemen,

    A couple of very pertinent points should you wish to not only read but understand…

    1. Almost all respected Islamic scholars say it is an improper innovation and forbid its celebration.
    It is also mentioned in the Quran surah(Imran)3:103 that it is forbidden in Islam to immitate the
    Kuf’ar.

    2. Although everyone agrees that the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)was the most significant
    event in Islamic history, it should be noted that the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
    & the next generation of Muslims did not observe this event.

    Furthermore, it is highlight that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not observe the birth or death
    anniversaries of his family and loved ones, including that of his first wife Khadijah bint Khuwaylid,
    (or his sons) nor did he advise his followers to observe his birthday.

    Some additional background:-

    The earliest accounts for the observance of Mawlid (Milad Un Nabi) can be found in eighth-century
    Mecca, when the house in which Muhammad was born was transformed into a place of prayer by
    Al-Khayzuran (mother of Harun al-Rashid)

    Public celebrations of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not occur until four centuries
    after his death. It was originally a festival of the Shia ruling class, not attended by the common
    people, with the first official Mawlid celebrations occurring in Egypt towards the end of the eleventh
    century.

    The Fatimids, who were descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through his daughter
    Fatimah. Fatimah nor Ali clebrated this invented festival, which is known as bid’a. The early
    celebrations included elements of Christian and Sufic influence, with animal sacrifices and
    torchlight processions along with public sermons and a feast. The celebrations occurred during
    the day, in contrast to modern day observances, with the Fatimid ruler playing a key role in the
    ceremonies.

    Emphasis was given to the Ahl al-Bayt with presentation of sermons and recitations of the Qur’an.
    The event also featured the award of gifts to officials in order to bolster support for the ruling
    caliph.

    The first public celebrations by Sunnis took place in twelfth-century Syria, under the rule of Nur
    ad-Din. Though there is no firm evidence to indicate the reason for the adoption of the Shi’ite
    festival by the Sunnis, some theorise the celebrations took hold to counter Christian influence in
    places such as Spain and Morocco. The practice was briefly halted by the Ayoubides when they
    came to power, and it became an event confined to family circles.

    It regained status as an official event again in 1207 when it was re-introduced by Muzaffar ad-din,
    the brother-in-law of Saladin, in Arbil, a town near Mosul, Iraq.

    The practice spread throughout the Muslim world, assimilating local customs, to places such as
    Cairo, where folklore and Sufic practices greatly influenced the celebrations. By 1588 it had spread
    to the court of Murad III, Sultan of the Ottoman empire. In 1910, it was given official status as a
    national festival throughout the Ottoman empire.

    Today it is an official holiday in many parts of the world.

    Is there a lesson to be learned here ? Judge for yourselves.

    Alaikum Assalaam

    god is not a correct translation of Allah please amend your website for this error. secondly whenever we write any SIFAT of Allah we write with a capital letter you have written god in small letter which is not correct.

    • suhansa88 says:

      @Masroor Masood,

      The “I Am” awarness in your self is the “real you” and without it you cannot find your body, world including tables, chairs and God too.

      Where do go during sleep? Our mind evaporates and the body, world and everything in the waking awareness are not there. Because of this awarness we remember to say that we slept. Past and future are creations of the mind.

      You may not understand this as you have been indoctrinated from young to a “belief system”. The world of your own is different from another person. What your mind projects you see. You can’t see me and neither know me at all. Am I in your world? No is the answer.

      Even our parents go missing someday and our great grandchildren do not remember the existence of us… because we are not in their world any more. So how can a past exist? We must keep believing that we had existed in the world other wise we don’t.

      When ever we observe the source of our selves via the mind we will definately find our selves as “awarenesses” And this awareness has been called by people who experienced as “god” , the “unknowable” and so forth. This awareness principle is always in the “now” and you have to be in present always to remember the past or the future.

      This state of being is our birth right and not any thing the “belief” of the unknown.

      Did I confuse you?

      It took 35 years of seeking and patiently waiting that i realised this “brilliance” in the self.

      Read Omar Khayam’s peom and Farid Al Attar “conference of 30 birds” you mind see some glimpse.

      ok tq.

    My question is this

    Should we celebrate Eid Milad Un Nabi? Infact I do agree about my concerns that we should celebrate but i heard from alotz of peoples that we should not celebrate this even because Muhammad(SAW) birth n death on the same date or month; please tell me in Quran n Hadith view

    • Shah Qaiser says:

      @Sibtain, plz read my replay about death day of Prophet (s.a.w)

    • binti nabil says:

      @Sibtain, asalamu alaikum

      there is hadith that says, mohammed (as) strongly advised not to celebrate his birthday, but those who will celebrate it to do so through prayers and good deeds.

      al qur’an tells us that we must respect all prophets equally. to my mind (please correct me if i am wrong) if we celebrate the birthday of mohammed (as) we must celebrate the birthdays of all the other prophets too.

      • Shah Qaiser says:

        @binti nabil, sir we celebrate the birthday of “IMAM-UL-AMBIA” and celebrate birthday of Hazart Adam a.s. and most respected Ambia a.s. born on 10 Muharam and other you have any others Ambia a.s. date of birth plz send me.

      • Ali says:

        @binti nabil, why do you use loud speakers during Adhan in Khana-e-Kabaa, the use of loud speakers is an innovation as there were no loud speakers during Holy Prophet(peace be upon him)’s time, is that not an innovation? Is this not the matter of faith? Plus, God ordered in Surah Yunus(58) to celebrate His mercy. Is there any bigger a mercy than Holy Prophet(peace be upon him)?

      • binti nabil says:

        @binti nabil,
        assalam alaikum

        Ali, I do not agree this is an innovation of religion as the calling of adhan is not an innovation only the amplification of it is new, which is not a change to the religion or faith. alhamdulillah more people can hear it.

        Shah Qaiser, Im sure you do, but I said ‘all of the prophets (pbut)’ and this is the thing all of the dates aren’t known.

        we are all struggling in this world together may our great creator guide us all on the right path. salam

        @Ahmed Sharif,
        I called that because when Muhammad’s death anniversary is also on 12th Rabi-ul-awwal,then why we conduct processions,burn firecrackers and distribute sweets to each other?I saw many processions while travelling through all countries.India is the only non-muslim country with more processions.Apsana must tell sorry.Even she will celebrate this holy day every year.

    From my childhood I know our beloved Prophet Sallalahu Alaihiwasallam’s birthday and the departure from earth is the same day, i.e. 12th Rabi-al Awwal. Now some people are telling it different. I don’t know whether those people are doing some dirty work to make us confused or not! Because they didn’t give any reference! I’m really surprised. If anybody has different data, they should give proper reference to that.

    One person even behaved very badly. He called Mrs Apsana a fool! He even didn’t bother to add Sallalahu Alaihiwasallam after our beloved Prophet’s name. How a Muslim could be so lazy to mention the full name of our Prophet?!?! He’d a time to call Mrs Apsana a fool, but he didnt have time to mention Sallalahu Alaihiwasallam or Peace Be Upon Him! From that person’s attitude, I’ve doubt…may be he’s trying to confuse Muslim community!

    when i go in masjids our mullas always refer to our teacher but this teaching they never talk about on 1 side they speak of our teacher to be good kind etc.. but on the other side they dont even mention what he thought or has written WHY?

    i repet again according to our founder our teacher and if 1 does not believe in ala hazrat ahmad khan barelwi he CAN not be a barelwi he says 12th is the day he passed and 8th is the date he was born.

    BROTHERS AND SISTERS
    i am alhamdullillah a barelwi and want to follow what is right not wrong and doesnt exit.go on utube go on other sects sites they are making fun of our teacher because of these aalims fazils mullas there mistakes are becoming a part of our ala hazrat ahmad khan barelwi is this what he tought us barelwis ?

    if you have an explanation or think that i am incorrect then plz do guide me with refrence not just by talk or massege refrence is important in this world without it your speach your dialouge is worthless.
    there are alot of differnt thoughts of which day our prophet was born passed away but im not refering to others here im talking about the 1 who we call our founder .

    i mean in those days there wasnt any muslim sects ie shia wahabi barelwi deoband nakshband but now there are and its abvious whos sect you follow you should follow it all not miss bits and bats unless you do not believe in the founder which makes you out of the sect.
    i hope and prey to the Almighty that we all follow the truth

    i have tried not to offend any one but if you do think i have affended you then plz forgive me i dont mean to do so i just want o no the truth thats all.

        @brother in islam,

        thanks alot brother i have got my answear from my local masjid .
        my main point was that ala hazrat ahmad raza khan he had written in his rissala that i say that 8th is the day of birth and 12th is the day of passing away but alot of ahlesunnat wal jammat / barelwi brothers did not agree and made acuusations that this risala was a job of duobandis/wahabis aswell as after showing them that the rissala was from a ahlesunnat wal jammat website then they said that ala hazrat did not say the 8th is the day of birth anyway to cut the story short i went to qari/aalim/students that study hadith and guess what they did agree that this was an opinion of ala hazrat ONLY opinion but in islam where the majority of imams agree on 1 particuller thing that stands basiccaly the majority counts .
        and that was the answear that i was looking for and i was looking for the truth not a lie which 1 sunni brother put towards me .

        but jazakallah its the 12th rabni ul awal

        The topic on Milad-un-Nabi
        I’ve heard some people saying that milad-un-nabi is an innovation.
        I want to know more in detail about this day. Is mila-un-nabi really and innovation or not ?
        Because if that was the case then why have people from years celebrating this event
        and
        why have some people started realising now that this occasion should not be celebrated ?

    Haith: … Beware of matters newly begun, for every matter newly begun is innovation, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in hell.
    There are different opinion from scholars some say yes and some no.
    The sheikh of islam and hadith master of his age, Ahmed ibn Hajar was asked about the practise of commemorating the birth of the Prophet (S.A.W) and gave the following written reply: ?As for the origin of the practise of commemorating the Prophet’s birth (S.A.W), it is an innovation (bid’a) that has not been conveyed to us from any of the pious early muslims of the first three centuries, despite which it has included bothfeatures that are praiseworthy and features that are not.

  47. hafsa says:

    I don’t understand why people are standing up on an issue of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)’S birth date? Did the Holy Prophet ever celebrate his own birthday? Did the Sahabi’s celebrate it? The concept of “birthday” comes originally from the west. If we really claim to love our Prophet we would adopt his ways and Sunnah into our lives. Instead of celebrating his birthday and remembering him only for a day, we should send durood to him everyday.

    • shah qaisar says:

      @hafsa,
      if i pray is celebrating birthday of prophet (pbuh) why? becouse Allah send his to teach us how we done Namaz after we completed namaz we thank Allah to give us Prophet (pbuh) in ‘Atayat’ and ‘darod sharif;

  48. hafsa says:

    yeah, yeah, i get all that, and that is what i said in the first place. i.e. to adopt his (pbuh)’s ways and to enfold the teachings of the Quran, Hadith and Sunnah in our lives. but i don’t really accept innovative ideas based on religion which keep no practical relation to the actions of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). When the Holy Prophet (pbuh) himself had it revealed on him that that day islam was a complete religion then who are we to introduce new concepts like “birthday”. Since when were there more than two eids? Kind of make me crumple up when i see that people celebrate this day through music oriented nasheeds. Didn’t the Prophet come to this earth to break musical instruments, and didn’t he insert his fingers in his ears when the flute was being played? Then why do people sing nasheeds and naats with instrumental backgrounds. Seems wrong to me.
