ORANJESTAD, St Eustatius — “Tiny, off-the- radar and rather unusual, the tiny island of Sint Eustatius (or ‘Statia’: population 3,400) has been home to the Caribs, French, Dutch and British residents; in 1776, it became the first foreign ‘power’ to recognize the USA”.
So says an article in the Lonely Planet written by Robert Reid on CNN.com.
The article goes on to explain how Statia is also known for its diving, its history and historical sites, its nature, in particular the Quill, a once active volcano with great views from its crater.
“We are rather grateful for the writing of Mr Reid and to be mentioned amongst cities such as San Juan, Puerto Rico; Havana, Cuba; and Cockburn Town, Grand Turk,” said Charles Lindo, tourism director of Statia.
“This type of exposure sure put us in a great spot when it comes to marketing the island as a niche market. We will continue to market and promote our tourism product home and abroad and hope to see lots more mentions like this in the near future.” added Lindo.
According to Reid and Lonely Planet, “Life’s not always a beach… some have histories that predate the pilgrims, cobbled centers that gaze out at the water and enough attractions to justify carving a day or two away from those perfect stretches of sand.”
